The first El Clasico of 2012 will take place tonight from the Bernabeu in a Real Madrid vs Barcelona match that will once again pit arguably the two most talented football clubs on the planet. So far, the Portugese mastermind’s attempts have been foiled – with Barcelona not only capturing the La Liga title, but going on to become the Champions League champions – going through Los Galacticos on both occasions. The one time that Real Madrid have had success with Barcelona, in fact the only time since mid 2008, was in the Copa del Rey final last year. Jose Mourinho’s aggressive defensive turtling tactics paid off on that night with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the winner in the 103rd minute.
Since then, we’ve witnessed everything from red cards to brawls to angry press conferences – but one thing remains, Barcelona have kept their psychological advantage over their bitter rivals. Real Madrid are currently top of the Spanish Primera, but Mourinho is well aware that his side will need to start getting results against Barca if they are to win anything.
Tonight’s game could be decided by the injuries that both teams are facing. Real Madrid will be without influential playmaker Di Maria, and right back Arbeloa, while Pepe is a game time decision. For Barcelona, their biggest abscence is the season ending injury to David Villa, while Puyol is also doubtful ahead of the El Clasico.
